SSI is focused on discovering a small-molecule inducer of telomerase gene expression. SSI has identified the major telomerase DNA repressor site within the human chromosome and the repressor protein that binds it. SSI is searching for drugs that strongly bind this repressor. Ideally, we will discover small-molecule drugs that transiently induce telomerase gene expression. Such telomerase inducer drugs should lengthen telomeres in normal human cells and thereby prevent cell senescence.
