Verimetra makes medical instruments "smart" and manufacturers miniature thin film sensors used in medical applications that involve very small high end catheters. The Company designs and manufactures sensors using micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, which is the only method available that produces sensors small enough to be embedded in surgical devices without changing their basic form or function, allowing our customers to sell the same products, now “smart”, without requiring the surgeon to use a new device.

In most medical procedures, from dentistry to ophthalmics, from neurosurgery to cardiac surgery, risk to the patient can be reduced by providing the medical professional with information that he currently cannot access. Receiving real-time data during the medical procedure offers the following benefits: (i) reduction of risk to the patient leading to better patient care, and (ii) decrease of the length of the procedure which leads to greater productivity for the surgeon and the hospital, and (iii) improvement of patient recovery which reduces the overall cost of health care and increases worker productivity.

Verimetra makes medical devices “smart” by embedding (US Patent 6,494,882) a variety of small sensors at the most effective place on or within the device. Simply stated, we make “dumb” metal tools “smart”. Examples include forceps, grippers, retractors, drills, and other surgical devices.

PRODUCTS

Surgery is continuously moving towards more minimally invasive methods. The main driver of this technical evolution is patient recovery: if less trauma is inflicted on the patient, the recovery period is shorter. Minimally invasive surgery by definition implies that the medical professional has little to no tactile or physical information about the environment near or at the surgical site. Verimetra addresses this issue directly by making “dumb” medical instruments “smart”.

We develop miniature sensors and actuators that are incorporated into medical devices. These sensors improve outcomes, lower risk and help control costs by providing the surgeon with:

• Instrument force and performance
• Tissue density, temperature or chemistry

  Better or faster methods of:

• Preparing tissue
• Cutting tissue
• Extracting tissue and fluids

  Verimetra is working closely with existing medical device companies to create new and enhanced products for the surgeons.
